The power of process
Sand Paintings is the latest body of work by Australian artist Violet Bond.
Bond’s engagement with earth began in 2018, when she started experimenting with wild clay following the birth of her son. Her practice later expanded into self-portraiture made directly in the dirt, with her own body becoming a vessel in place of the ceramic forms used in her earlier sculptural works.
Sand Paintings continues this material and conceptual progression, carrying earth from three-dimensional vessels and bodily interventions onto the two-dimensional surface of raw canvas. Made with pigments, clay, beach rocks, charcoal and sand collected throughout the Northern Territory, the works trace the textures and rhythms of its wild environments. Through these materials, Bond continues her exploration of life, death, transformation and our physical relationship with place.
This is a new and evolving body of work. A small selection is currently available in Darwin through Darwin Design Destination, with further works released as they are made.
